This 5-day Vietnam motorcycle tour is an excellent option for riders who want a genuine mountain riding experience without committing to a longer trip. Away from the major cities, the roads are generally quiet, allowing you to enjoy the scenery and ride at your own pace. However, you should always remain alert for fast-moving trucks, cars, livestock, and other unexpected hazards. Ride defensively, keep your speed under control, and take a rest whenever you feel you need one.

The route combines beautiful mountain roads, rural villages, rice fields, ethnic minority communities, and spectacular landscapes, making it possible to experience a very different side of Vietnam in just five days. DETAILED ITINERARY

Day 1: Hanoi – Nghia Lo. (~250 km, ~7h)

We begin our Central North Vietnam motorcycle tour with an easy ride out of Hanoi on mainly sealed roads. To avoid the heaviest traffic in the city centre, we leave Hanoi from the western side and follow the riverside road towards Son Tay.

Once outside the capital, the landscape quickly changes from urban streets to peaceful countryside. We ride through rural areas surrounded by rice fields, small villages, farms, and tree-lined roads, enjoying a relaxed start to the journey. This section is ideal for settling into the ride and getting accustomed to Vietnamese traffic and road conditions.

After passing Son Tay, we gradually turn towards the mountains and continue in the direction of Nghia Lo via Ba Khe. The road becomes increasingly scenic as the flat delta gives way to rolling hills and then higher mountain terrain.

This is one of the less populated regions of Northern Vietnam, so the countryside feels remarkably open and peaceful. With fewer towns and less traffic, the landscape becomes increasingly impressive, offering spectacular views of forested mountains, valleys, rice terraces, and remote rural communities.

After approximately 250 km and seven hours of riding, we arrive in Nghia Lo, ready for the next stage of our mountain journey.

Day 2: Nghia Lo – Than Uyen. (~140 km, ~6h)

Today we leave Nghia Lo and head deeper into the mountains of Northwest Vietnam, following a more remote and adventurous route. The road becomes wild, rough, and bumpy, making this a great day for riders who enjoy challenging mountain roads and spectacular scenery.

We travel through the impressive Mu Cang Chai massif, one of the most scenic mountain regions in Northern Vietnam. The route climbs steadily through rugged terrain, with winding roads, forested slopes, and remote valleys appearing around every corner.

From the higher sections of the route, we can enjoy some of the most beautiful mountain views in Northern Vietnam. The landscape stretches across layers of mountains and valleys, with terraced rice fields and small ethnic minority villages scattered across the slopes.

After reaching Than Uyen, there is time to explore the surrounding countryside and visit nearby villages. This area is home to several ethnic communities, making a village visit an excellent opportunity to see traditional houses, farming activities, and everyday rural life away from the main tourist routes.

We spend the night in a local hotel in Than Uyen.

Day 3: Than Uyen – Sapa. (~140 km, ~5h)

We begin the morning with a relaxed walk or stroll around Than Uyen. The surrounding area is mainly inhabited by Flower H’Mong and Dzao communities, and the morning provides a chance to experience the local atmosphere before getting back on the bikes.

We then set off towards Sapa, following a combination of dirt tracks and mountain roads. Around 100 km of the route follows an easier track, while the final approximately 40 km is on a sealed mountain road leading towards Sapa.

The scenery throughout the ride is spectacular, with high mountains, valleys, forests, and isolated villages providing plenty of opportunities for photographs and short breaks.

Depending on the weather, road conditions, and how we feel, we can either finish the day in Sapa or continue further towards Muong Hum, where we can stay with the Giay people.

For riders who want more adventure, the extended option includes approximately 40 km of dirt road. This quieter route offers beautiful riding through remote countryside and provides a more authentic experience away from the main roads.

Day 4: Sapa – Vu Linh. (~250 km, ~7h)

We leave Sapa and begin the descent towards Lao Cai, enjoying the changing scenery as we move from the high mountains towards the lower valleys. From Lao Cai, we continue in the direction of Thac Ba Lake, one of the largest and most scenic lakes in Northern Vietnam.

The road is mainly easy and paved as far as Luc Yen, allowing us to make good progress while enjoying the surrounding countryside. From there, we leave the main road and take a quieter secondary road along Thac Ba Lake.

This section passes through the traditional territories of the Dzao and Tay people, with small villages, forested hills, farmland, and beautiful views across the lake. The slower backroad route gives us plenty of opportunities to stop, take photographs, and experience rural life away from the busy tourist routes.

Eventually, we arrive at the traditional village of Vu Linh, where we stay with our local friends in a Tay host family. The welcome here is exceptional, and the evening provides a wonderful opportunity to enjoy traditional food, local hospitality, and the peaceful atmosphere of the countryside.

Day 5: Vu Linh – Hanoi. (~180 km, ~6h) End of Central North Motorcycling.

After breakfast, we leave Vu Linh and begin the final ride back to Hanoi. The route combines paved roads with easy tracks as we travel towards Son Duong, located at the foot of the Tam Dao mountain range.

The countryside gradually changes as we leave the more remote mountain areas behind. We continue through rural landscapes, villages, farmland, and quiet roads before reconnecting with the riverside road near Son Tay.

Following the river route allows us to avoid much of the heavy traffic on the main highways and makes the final section of the journey more relaxed. From Son Tay, we continue towards Hanoi and aim to arrive before the busiest rush-hour period.

After approximately 180 km and six hours of riding, we reach Hanoi, bringing this memorable 5-day Central North Vietnam motorcycle tour to an end. The journey combines mountain roads, dirt tracks, ethnic minority villages, Thac Ba Lake, Sapa, and authentic homestay experiences in a compact itinerary.
