Mai Chau Motorbiking Introduction
This Mai Chau Motorbiking adventure is designed for people working in Hanoi who want to escape the city for a weekend and enjoy fresh air, mountain scenery, and rural Vietnam. It is also a great option for travelers who have limited time but still want to experience Vietnam by motorbike.
In just two days, you will ride along winding mountain roads, explore quiet countryside, stay with local Thai people, enjoy traditional food, and experience their culture, including Xoe dancing and local music. The standard route is ideal for intermediate and experienced riders, but we can also adjust the itinerary with shorter routes and quieter backroads if you prefer fewer riding hours.
This is also a good introduction to motorbiking in Vietnam on smaller bikes, especially if you want to enjoy the countryside without committing to a long-distance motorcycle adventure.
If you have an extra day, we can extend the journey and explore more of the spectacular countryside around Mai Chau and Pu Luong Nature Reserve. This becomes a relaxed 3-day Mai Chau motorcycle tour with more time for riding, trekking, villages, and local experiences.
Mai Chau Motorbiking Route
Day 1: Hanoi – Mai Chau. (~200 km, ~6 h)
We leave Hanoi from the western side of the city, taking a relatively direct route with only a few traffic lights before reaching the countryside. This is much more enjoyable than riding through central Hanoi and dealing with dozens of traffic lights before reaching Highway 6.
We head toward Son Tay along the Red River and then cross the Trung Ha Bridge before continuing on the newer road toward Hoa Binh.
Once we leave the fertile Red River Delta, the scenery changes quickly. Traditional farmland gives way to dramatic limestone formations, forested foothills, and mountain valleys inhabited by Muong communities. We gradually climb toward the main mountain range before crossing a high, scenic, forest-covered pass.
The road then descends into the beautiful and relatively secluded Mai Chau Valley, where we spend the night with local friends in a traditional Thai stilt house in Poom Coong Village.
Mai Chau is situated between the Da River and Ma River, creating a fertile valley surrounded by mountains, forests, rivers, lakes, rice fields, and countless small paths. The area offers excellent opportunities for motorcycling, trekking, village visits, and cultural experiences.
Around Mai Chau, you can encounter different ethnic communities, including Muong, White Thai, H’Mong, and Dao people, whether visiting local villages, exploring markets, trekking through the hills, boating, or riding through the countryside.
Day 2: Mai Chau – Hanoi. (~200 km, ~6 h) End of Mai Chau Motorbiking.
We start the morning with some time to explore Mai Chau, visit nearby villages, or simply enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the valley before getting back on the bikes.
For the return journey, we take a different route wherever possible, riding through limestone mountain landscapes, rural villages, and quiet backroads rather than simply retracing yesterday’s route. This gives you another perspective of the countryside and makes the return ride more interesting.
The journey back to Hanoi is approximately 200 km, with around six hours of riding depending on the route and stops. We aim to arrive in Hanoi before 5 pm, allowing us to avoid the worst of the evening rush-hour traffic.
After two days of mountain riding, local culture, scenic backroads, and rural exploration, the Mai Chau Motorbiking adventure comes to an end in Hanoi.

– Most of our tours are private and only some are open to more riders. Updates were posted here. Currently, there is no short tours you could join but you can start a new trip and we post an update on this page to get more riders for you.
– For the cost, please follow this link and look at a group of two. More people join you pay less. Bike upgrades are available.
A deposit is needed to secure a booking and instructions will be sent after we agree about a final tour itinerary.
