Our team created this 4-day Central North Vietnam motorbike tour for riders who want to experience some of the best scenery and local culture of northern Vietnam in a short but rewarding adventure. In just four days, the route takes you from the peaceful Mai Chau Valley, home to the friendly Thai people, through spectacular mountain landscapes and remote countryside to Vu Linh, where you can experience the warm hospitality of the Dao people.

This Northern Vietnam motorcycle tour is not only about stunning scenery. Along the way, you will discover quiet backroads, mountain passes, traditional villages, forests, lakes, and authentic rural communities. Staying with local families also gives you a chance to experience a side of Vietnam that is far away from the usual tourist routes. The combination of mountain riding, ethnic minority culture, local homestays, and beautiful countryside makes this an excellent short Vietnam motorbike adventure.

For riders looking for more adventure, there is also an option to include off-road riding toward the summit of Ta Xua Mountain. This can be more challenging, so your guide will discuss the route and riding conditions with you and help decide whether this option is suitable for your riding experience.

Trip Itinerary

Day 1: Hanoi – Mai Chau. (~160 km, ~6 h)

Once we leave the Red River Delta, where traditional farming and rural life remain an important part of the landscape, we ride west through the countryside toward the mountains. Along the way, we pass dramatic limestone monoliths and enter the foothills inhabited by Muong people. The scenery gradually becomes more mountainous as we approach the main range.

We then climb a high and beautifully forested mountain pass, following a winding road before descending into the peaceful and relatively hidden Mai Chau Valley. Surrounded by green mountains and rice fields, Mai Chau is one of the most attractive destinations for a short Northern Vietnam motorbike tour. Tonight, we stay with local friends in a traditional Thai ethnic stilt house, allowing us to experience genuine local hospitality.

The Mai Chau Valley lies between the Da River and Ma River, creating a fertile landscape of rice paddies, forests, lakes, rivers, and medium-sized mountains. The area is also crossed by countless small paths and trails, offering excellent opportunities for trekking, boating, and motorcycle exploration.

Mai Chau and its surrounding mountains are home to several ethnic communities, including the Muong, White Thai, H’Mong, and Dao. During the journey, we may meet local people in traditional markets or visit their villages while trekking, boating, or riding through the countryside.

Day 2: Mai Chau – Phu Yen. (~150 km, ~6 h)

Today we leave Mai Chau and ride toward Moc Chau, continuing through the beautiful mountain landscapes of northern Vietnam. The route takes us through rolling highlands, rural villages, forests, and winding mountain roads before we reach the Da River.

We cross the Da River reservoir, enjoying impressive views across the water and surrounding mountains. From here, we leave the larger roads behind and follow a beautiful winding secondary road toward Phu Yen. This quieter route provides a more relaxed riding experience and allows us to experience the rural side of Northwest Vietnam away from the main tourist routes.

The combination of mountain roads, reservoirs, forests, ethnic villages, and peaceful countryside makes this an enjoyable section of our Central North Vietnam motorcycle adventure. We eventually arrive in Phu Yen, where we check into a local guesthouse and spend the night.

Day 3: Phu Yen – Vu Linh. (~150 km, ~6 h)

Today we ride from Phu Yen to Vu Linh, following a scenic combination of paved and dirt roads through the countryside. The route takes us through landscapes dominated by dramatic limestone formations, palm trees, green hills, and rural villages, providing plenty of variety for a memorable North Vietnam motorcycle adventure.

As we approach Thac Ba Lake, one of the largest reservoirs in northern Vietnam, we leave the motorcycles behind and board a boat waiting for us on the lakeshore. We then cruise across the peaceful waters from west to east, surrounded by forested hills, small islands, and beautiful rural scenery.

Our destination is the Dao village of Vu Linh, where the local community is famous for its warm hospitality. After a day combining motorbike riding, dirt roads, boating, and mountain scenery, the exceptional welcome from the Dao people makes this a particularly memorable night of the 4 Days Central North Vietnam motorbike tour.

Day 4: Vu Linh – Hanoi. (~180 km, ~7 h) End of 4 Days Central North.

After breakfast, we leave Vu Linh and begin our final ride back to Hanoi. Instead of taking the busiest main roads, we follow a more scenic route through the countryside and Son Tay, allowing us to enjoy quieter roads and a more relaxed final day on the motorcycle.

The journey takes approximately seven hours and covers around 180 km. By traveling via Son Tay, we aim to reach Hanoi at around 3 pm, comfortably before the city’s evening rush hour and the heaviest traffic.

This marks the end of our 4-day Central North Vietnam motorcycle tour. During the journey, you will have experienced Mai Chau Valley, ethnic minority villages, mountain roads, the Da River, Thac Ba Lake, boating, dirt roads, and the traditional hospitality of Thai and Dao communities. It is a short but diverse introduction to the landscapes and cultures of northern Vietnam.
