7 Days Central North Vietnam Motorbike Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Hanoi – Nghia Lo. (~180 km, ~7 h)

Our 7-day Central North Vietnam motorcycle tour begins with an enjoyable ride from Hanoi toward Nghia Lo. The first section is relatively easy, following mainly sealed roads through the peaceful countryside west of the capital.

As we leave Hanoi behind, the landscape gradually changes from busy urban areas to traditional rural villages and rice fields. The road passes through fertile agricultural land, with green paddies, small villages, local markets, and everyday Vietnamese life visible along the way.

As we continue west, the mountains become increasingly prominent, and we eventually head toward the impressive Hoang Lien mountain range. The range takes its name from the Hoang Lien tree, which is traditionally associated with the area.

This first riding day provides a gentle introduction to the journey, allowing you to settle into the motorcycle, enjoy the countryside, and prepare for the more challenging mountain roads ahead.

Overnight: Hotel in Nghia Lo.

Day 2: Nghia Lo – Than Uyen. (~140 km, ~6 h)

Today the riding becomes more adventurous as we leave Nghia Lo and continue toward Than Uyen. The road becomes increasingly wild, winding, and bumpy, taking us deeper into the spectacular mountain landscapes of Central North Vietnam.

One of the major highlights is the Mu Cang Chai mountain region, located between the Sapa and Hanoi areas. This rugged mountainous massif rises to impressive elevations and is famous for its dramatic landscapes and spectacular terraced rice fields.

As we climb higher, the road provides increasingly impressive views across the surrounding valleys and mountains. From the higher sections, you can enjoy some of the most beautiful mountain scenery in northern Vietnam, particularly when the weather is clear.

This is a rewarding day for motorcycle enthusiasts who enjoy winding mountain roads, remote landscapes, and challenging riding conditions. Take your time, stop frequently for photographs, and enjoy the scenery rather than rushing to Than Uyen.

Day 3: Than Uyen – Sapa. (~120 km, ~5 h)

After a relaxed morning in Than Uyen, take some time to walk around, enjoy breakfast, and explore the local surroundings before getting back on the motorcycle. We then head toward Sapa, following spectacular mountain roads through one of the most impressive landscapes in northern Vietnam.

The major highlight of today’s ride is O Quy Ho Pass, one of the highest and most beautiful mountain passes in Vietnam. The winding road climbs through the Hoang Lien Son mountain range, with dramatic mountain views, deep valleys, and changing scenery along the way. On a clear day, the views from the pass are unforgettable.

Although today’s riding distance is relatively short, this is arguably the highlight of the 7-day Central North Vietnam motorcycle tour. The combination of high-altitude riding, spectacular scenery, and winding mountain roads makes O Quy Ho Pass a favorite section for motorcycle enthusiasts.

After several days in remote mountain areas, we arrive back in Sapa, where you can enjoy the town’s evening atmosphere, local restaurants, cafés, and night activities. It is a welcome change after spending so much time on quiet rural roads.

Day 4: Sapa – Trekking.

Although Sapa and Bac Ha have become increasingly popular tourist destinations, there are still quieter villages and trails where you can experience a more authentic side of northern Vietnam. Today we leave the motorcycle behind and explore the countryside on foot, trekking toward Ta Van Village, an area traditionally inhabited by the Giay people.

The trek takes us through beautiful valleys, traditional villages, mountain landscapes, and spectacular terraced rice fields. Along the way, we pass through Lao Chai Village, with plenty of opportunities to stop, take photographs, meet local people, and enjoy the scenery.

Lunch can be arranged in Lao Chai, Ta Van, or another local village, depending on the day’s pace and where we feel like stopping. One of the memorable parts of the trek is meeting local children, who may happily walk alongside you for sections of the route.

At the end of the day, we stay in a traditional Giay family homestay, sleeping in a simple and basic stilt house. The accommodation is intentionally rustic, but this is part of the experience. Staying with a local family allows you to enjoy authentic Vietnamese mountain hospitality, local food, and a glimpse into everyday life away from the tourist centers.

Day 5: Sapa – Bac Ha. (~105 km, ~3 h)

Today we leave Sapa and ride toward Bac Ha, following a scenic route through the mountains and valleys of northern Vietnam. The total riding distance is approximately 105 km and, without extended stops, takes around three hours.

We first descend from Sapa toward Lao Cai, covering approximately 34 km as the road winds down from the highlands. From Lao Cai, we turn toward Bac Ha and climb back into the mountains for another 70 km. This section offers a stunning mountain landscape, with winding roads, green valleys, rural villages, and beautiful viewpoints along the way.

After arriving in Bac Ha, we check in at Dang Khoa Hotel and have lunch before taking some time to relax. In the afternoon, we leave the motorcycle behind and trek toward Lung Phinh Village, home to the Phu La people. This provides an excellent opportunity to explore the quieter countryside around Bac Ha and experience local village life away from the main tourist areas.

Bac Ha is particularly well known for its colorful ethnic communities and traditional markets, making it an interesting destination for travelers looking to combine motorbike adventure and cultural exploration in northern Vietnam.

Overnight: Bac Ha.

Day 6: Bac Ha – Luc Yen – Vu Linh. (~180 km, ~6 h)

Today we leave Bac Ha and begin the ride toward Luc Yen, continuing south through the spectacular mountain landscapes of northern Vietnam. The route combines winding mountain roads, rural villages, forested hills, and peaceful valleys as we gradually leave the highlands behind.

From Luc Yen, we continue toward Vu Linh, with approximately two hours of riding around the lake on a smaller and quieter road. This scenic lakeside route is lined with palm trees and offers beautiful views across the water and surrounding mountains. It is a relaxing change of scenery after several days of riding through the higher mountains around Sapa and Bac Ha.

By the time we reach Vu Linh, it will probably already be dark. However, the warm welcome from the local host family makes the long riding day worthwhile. After arriving, you can relax, enjoy a traditional meal, and experience the friendly hospitality of the local community.

Although it has been a long day on the motorcycle, the Vu Linh homestay experience is a rewarding way to finish the day’s journey and prepare for the final ride back toward Hanoi.

Day 7: Vu Linh – Hanoi. ~180 km, ~6 h. End of 7 Days Central North Vietnam.

After breakfast, we leave Vu Linh and begin the final riding day of our 7-day Central North Vietnam motorcycle tour. Today’s route is relatively easy and relaxing, giving you time to enjoy the final stretch of rural scenery before returning to Hanoi.

Rather than following the busiest roads, we take a quieter alternative route wherever possible to avoid heavy traffic. The road passes through peaceful countryside, local villages, and agricultural areas, offering a pleasant contrast to the high mountain roads and challenging sections earlier in the trip.

After several days of mountain riding, trekking, ethnic villages, spectacular passes, and remote backroads, this relaxed final day is a comfortable way to complete the journey. We gradually make our way back toward Hanoi, where this 7-day Central North Vietnam motorbike adventure comes to an end.
