This 8 Days Northeast Vietnam extends further to the coast and include Halong Bay, one of must-see places that guidebooks recommend. Halong Bay offers a cruising experience, rather different from motorbike riding. In other words, it’s a place to relax and look at krast stone mountains of this natural wonder.

Below is a video clip that has some portions of this trip. In case you want to watch more videos please check our YouTube channel.
Day 1: Hanoi – Na Khan. ~180 km, ~6 h.
Today is our first day of 8 Days Northeast Vietnam loop. In fact, it is quite a long drive but easy (early departure is better) from Hanoi to Na Khan for 180 km. The road is sealed all the way until Bac Kan. However, the last part from Bac Kan to Na Khan is wild and little bumpy. Even a new road was built near this village recently but the experience is still very good. Mr. Lo, the chief of the village will welcome us in his house.
Day 2: Na Khan – Ba Be. ~50 km, ~2 h.
A short drive from Na Khan to Ba Be on a bumpy road. Then we enjoy lunch at our host family’s house. Take a beautiful boat cruise on the lake and river. Go to market (if it is the day you arrive). Stop at waterfall, swim etc. Down the waterfall, we could visit the village and a small school (only a few pupils during the summer). Finally, we propose to stay in the stilt house of a Tay family.
Day 3: Ba Be – Cao Bang. ~170 km, ~8h.
This is a beautiful ride up to Cao Bang province. On this portion of riding, there are few passes from where you can dominate the area. Though the road is easy, there are still many blind curves. While riding, we can stop very often for photos. In general, with stops for drinks and food, it should be an 8-hour journey. Stay in a hotel in Cao Bang.
Day 4: Cao Bang – Ban Gioc Waterfalls – Quang Uyen. ~130 km, ~2h.
Having obtained permission from the border police we make our way through spectacular scenery to Vietnam’s most impressive waterfalls – Ban Gioc. Weather permitting we can swim right up to where the 50 m high falls hit the river.
Then ride 1 more hour back to the beautiful village of Quang Hoa, in the middle of a mountain cirque. This is the territory of Nung An people. To make it more special, we spend the night in our friend’s house of Nung people. In addition to amazing hospitality, the food prepared by the hostess is a real delicacy.
Day 5: Quang Uyen – Lang Son. ~150 km, ~5h.
Drive from Quang Hoa to Lang Son. Once in Lang Son, we will have time to discover this city. In fact, it has become a big trading post between China and Vietnam. You could shop for low price Chinese electronic products or gifts to bring home at Dong Kinh and Tam Thanh markets.
Overnight in a hotel.
Day 6: Lang Son – Bai Chay. ~180 km, ~7 h.
We have a long ride mainly on secondary road, passing many coal mines along the road. We hope you are not covered in dark coal dust when we arrive in Halong City (the new name of Bai Chay).
Day 7: Halong Bay cruising. Sleep on the boat.
Relax in the morning to recover from the long ride yesterday. Then there are two options:
1. Join a group trip at noon. Depart by boat to Halong Bay, start cruise and check in cabins. Then lunch on the boat, enjoy deluxe Vietnamese set menu. Transfer by tender from boat to Surprising Cave. Enjoy kayaking and swimming, or relaxing on the boat. Best of all, dinner is served with authentic Vietnamese food. Evening activities – choose from optional evening activities: enjoy movies, sing karaoke or join squid fishing with our crew (in case the weather is good).
2. Book a private boat and cruise in Halong Bay. Sleep on the boat. However, this option costs extra. We will let you know the cost if you want this upgrade.
Day 8: Halong – Hanoi. ~160 km, ~5 h.
Two options with the cruise:
1. Transfer by tender from boat to Titov island, swimming or just relaxing. Then continue cruise and refresh on board and come back to Bai Chay. Check-out cabins and pay for your drinks. Lunch at Thang Long restaurant in Halong city (or on the boat).
2. Continue cruising in Halong Bay. Then lunch on the boat and return at noon. However, this option costs extra and we will let you know the cost if you want this upgrade.
Pick up the bike(s) and ride back to Hanoi on highway 18 and then 1B. Arrive in Hanoi around 5pm.
