Below is a video clip that has some portions of this trip. In case you want to watch more videos please check our YouTube channel.
Day 1: Hanoi – Na Khan. ~180 km, ~6 h.
Quite a long drive but easy (early departure is better) from Hanoi to Na Khan for 180 km. The road is sealed all the way until Bac Kan and the last part from Bac Kan to Na Khan is wild and little bumpy. Na Khan is a Tay village, lost in the middle of the primitive forest. A new road was built near this village recently but the experience is still very good. Mr. Lo, the chief of the village will welcome us in his house.
Day 2: Na Khan – Ba Be. ~50 km, ~2 h.
A short drive from Na Khan to Ba Be on a bumpy road. Then we have lunch at our host family’s house. Take a beautiful boat cruise on the lake and river. Go to market (if it is the day you arrive). Stop at waterfall, swim etc. Down the waterfall, we could visit the village and a small school (only a few pupils during the summer). Finally, we propose to stay in the stilt house of a Tay family.
Day 3: Ba Be – Cao Bang. ~170 km, ~8h.
Beautiful ride up to Cao Bang province. Few passes from where you can dominate the area. The road is easy but has many blind curves. While riding, we can stop very often for photos. In general, with stops for drinks and food, it should be an 8-hour journey. Stay in a hotel in Cao Bang.
Day 4: Cao Bang – Lang Son (~180 km, ~5 h)
Ride from Cao Bang to Lang Son on the famous historical Highway 4. Once in Lang Son, we will have time to discover this city which has become a big trading post between China and Vietnam. In fact, you can shop for cheap Chinese products at the nearby Dong Kinh market.
Overnight in hotel.
Day 5: Lang Son – Hanoi. (~150 km, ~3 h)
An easy day back to Hanoi on the new Highway 1B. Therefore, you can wake up late in the morning as we guess you can be tired after 4 long riding days. In addition, we could ride many back roads to avoid the highway if you don’t like it.
Finally, arrival at Hanoi around 3pm to avoid rush hour. 5 Days Northeast Vietnam by motorbike ends.
