4 Days Northeast Vietnam Itinerary

Day 1: Hanoi – Na Khan. ~180 km, ~6 h.

Quite a long drive but easy (early departure is better) from Hanoi to Na Khan for 180 km. The road is sealed all the way until Bac Kan and the last part from Bac Kan to Na Khan is wild and little bumpy. Na Khan is a Tay village, lost in the middle of the primitive forest. A new road was built near this village recently but the experience is still very good. Mr. Lo, the chief of the village will welcome us to his house.

Day 2: Na Khan – Ba Be. ~50 km, ~2 h.

A short drive from Na Khan to Ba Be on a bumpy road. Then lunch at our host family’s house. Take a beautiful boat cruise on the lake and river. Go to the market (if it is the day you arrive). Stop at a waterfall, swim, etc. Down the waterfall, we could visit the village and a small school (only a few pupils during the summer). Finally, we propose to stay in the stilt house of a Tay family.

Day 3: Ba Be – Quang Hoa. ~170 km, ~5 h.

You will be woken up early by the noise and smell of the typical Vietnamese countryside. First, a beautiful ride up to Cao Bang province. There are a few passes from where you can dominate the area. The road is easy but many curves. While riding, we can stop a lot to take great photos. In fact, with the stop for drinks and food, it should be an 8-hour journey. Then ride 1 more hour to reach the beautiful village of Quang Hoa, in the middle of a mountain cirque. This is the territory of Nung An people. Spend the night at our friend’s house.

Day 4: Quang Hoa – Hanoi. ~300 km, ~9 h. End of 4 Days Northeast Vietnam.

Ride from Quang Hoa to Hanoi on Highway 4 via Lang Son or repeat the roads from the last three days via Cao Bang, Bac Kan, and Thai Nguyen. The road is asphalted almost of the way and it takes 9 hours to ride back to Hanoi.

This day is long but after 3 days in Vietnamese traffic, we are sure you will find it easy.
