4 Days Northeast Vietnam Itinerary

Day 1: Hanoi – Na Khan. (~180 km, ~6 h)

Today we leave Hanoi early and ride north toward Na Khan, covering approximately 180 km. It is a relatively long but generally easy riding day, and an early departure is recommended so we can enjoy the countryside without rushing. The road is paved all the way to Bac Kan, allowing for comfortable progress through rural northern Vietnam.

From Bac Kan, the route becomes much more adventurous. The final section to Na Khan follows a rough, wild, and slightly bumpy road, taking us deeper into the remote mountains. Na Khan is a traditional Tay ethnic village, tucked away among forests and far from the busy tourist routes. Although a new road has recently been built near the village, the area still retains its peaceful and authentic atmosphere.

Upon arrival, we are warmly welcomed by Mr. Lo, the village chief, who invites us to stay at his home. This provides a wonderful opportunity to experience genuine Tay hospitality and rural life in Northeast Vietnam. Overnight in Na Khan.

Day 2: Na Khan – Ba Be. (~50 km, ~2 h)

Today is a much shorter riding day, giving us plenty of time to explore the spectacular Ba Be area. We leave Na Khan and follow a scenic but bumpy mountain road toward Ba Be, covering approximately 50 km through peaceful countryside and forested hills.

After arriving, we have lunch at our Tay host family’s house before beginning our afternoon adventure. We take a beautiful boat cruise on Ba Be Lake and the surrounding river, enjoying the calm waters, limestone mountains, forests, and traditional villages along the shoreline.

Depending on the day of our arrival, we may also visit a local market and experience the daily life of people from the surrounding mountain communities. There is time to stop at a waterfall, take a refreshing swim, and explore the countryside around the lake. Below the waterfall, we can visit a nearby village and a small local school, which may have only a few pupils during the summer months.

In the evening, we return to our host family and stay in a traditional Tay ethnic stilt house. The combination of motorcycle riding, boating, waterfalls, local villages, and authentic homestay experiences makes this one of the highlights of our 4 Days Northeast Vietnam motorcycle tour.

Day 3: Ba Be – Quang Hoa. (~170 km, ~5 h)

We wake early to the sounds and aromas of the Vietnamese countryside, then prepare for another beautiful day of mountain riding. We leave Ba Be and head toward Cao Bang Province, following winding roads through increasingly dramatic landscapes. Along the way, we cross several mountain passes with excellent viewpoints over the surrounding valleys and highlands.

The road is generally easy to ride, but there are many bends and curves, making this an enjoyable section for riders who like technical mountain roads. We will have plenty of opportunities to stop for photographs and enjoy the scenery. Although the riding distance is around 170 km, frequent stops for photos, drinks, food, and sightseeing mean that the complete journey can take around eight hours.

After reaching the Cao Bang area, we continue for approximately another hour toward Quang Hoa, a beautiful rural village located in a spectacular mountain basin. This area is traditionally inhabited by the Nung An people, one of the ethnic communities of Northeast Vietnam.

The peaceful surroundings and traditional village atmosphere provide a great contrast to the busy roads of the cities. We spend the night at our local friend’s house, enjoying genuine hospitality and experiencing another side of rural Northeast Vietnam.

Day 4: Quang Hoa – Hanoi. (~300 km, ~9 h) End of 4 Days Northeast Vietnam.

Today is our final and longest riding day of the 4 Days Northeast Vietnam motorcycle tour. We have two possible routes back to Hanoi. The first option is to ride from Quang Hoa toward Lang Son via Highway 4, following a different route through the mountains. Alternatively, we can repeat sections of the roads from the previous three days, traveling through Cao Bang, Bac Kan, and Thai Nguyen.

Most of today’s route is paved, making the approximately 300 km journey considerably easier than some of the rougher sections encountered earlier in the tour. Even though it is a long day of around nine hours of riding, the experience gained during the previous three days of riding through Vietnamese countryside and mountain roads should make the journey feel much more manageable.

We continue south toward Hanoi, gradually leaving the remote mountains of Northeast Vietnam behind. As we approach the capital, traffic becomes increasingly busy, providing a final taste of Vietnamese road conditions before we arrive in Hanoi and officially finish our 4 Days Northeast Vietnam motorbike adventure.
