In just three days, you will ride from the countryside into the high mountains of Northeast Vietnam, following scenic backroads, winding mountain passes, and quiet rural routes far from the main tourist trails.

One of the highlights of this Northeast Vietnam motorcycle tour is a peaceful boat trip on Ba Be Lake, surrounded by limestone mountains, dense forests, and traditional villages. 3 Days Northeast Vietnam Itinerary

Day 1: Hanoi – Na Khan. (~180 km, ~6 h)

Today is a relatively long but straightforward riding day as we leave Hanoi early and head north toward Na Khan. The journey covers approximately 180 km, with mostly easy riding. The road is paved all the way to Bac Kan, allowing us to make good progress through the countryside.

Beyond Bac Kan, the character of the route changes as we follow a more remote and rougher mountain road toward Na Khan. The final section can be a little bumpy, adding some adventure to the ride as we leave the main roads behind. Na Khan is a traditional Tay ethnic village, surrounded by forests and tucked away in a peaceful rural setting.

Although a newer road has recently been built close to the village, Na Khan still offers an authentic glimpse of rural Northeast Vietnam. Upon arrival, we are warmly welcomed by Mr. Lo, the village chief, at his traditional home. We spend the night experiencing local hospitality and the peaceful atmosphere of this remote Tay community.

Day 2: Na Khan – Ba Be. ~50 km, ~2 h.

Today is a much shorter riding day, allowing us plenty of time to experience the spectacular Ba Be Lake and surrounding countryside. We leave Na Khan and follow a scenic but somewhat bumpy mountain road toward Ba Be, covering approximately 50 km.

After arriving, we enjoy lunch at our Tay host family’s home before setting out to explore the lake and surrounding waterways. A boat cruise on Ba Be Lake and the river is one of the highlights of this Northeast Vietnam motorcycle tour. Surrounded by limestone mountains, forests, and small villages, the lake offers a peaceful contrast to the previous day’s riding.

Depending on the day of our visit, we can also explore a local market, visit a waterfall, and take a refreshing swim. Below the waterfall, we may visit a nearby village and a small local school, which can have only a few pupils during the summer months.

In the evening, we stay in a traditional Tay ethnic stilt house, enjoying a home-cooked dinner and genuine local hospitality in the heart of Ba Be National Park.

Day 3: Ba Be – Hanoi. ~240 km,~8 h. End of 3 Days Northeast Vietnam.

Today we leave the mountains of Ba Be and begin our journey back to Hanoi. At approximately 240 km, this is another long riding day, so an early departure is recommended. We follow a mixture of countryside roads and busier highways as we gradually leave Northeast Vietnam behind.

Our goal is to arrive in Hanoi before 5 pm, helping us avoid the worst of the city’s evening rush-hour traffic. The final section from Thai Nguyen to Hanoi, approximately 80 km, is one of the busiest highway stretches in northern Vietnam, so careful riding and good timing are important.

After three days of mountain roads, remote Tay villages, Ba Be Lake, boating, waterfalls, and local homestays, we arrive back in Hanoi, marking the end of our 3 Days Northeast Vietnam motorbike tour.
