This Northwest Vietnam in 9 Days motorcycle tour is a fantastic way to explore one of the most remote, rugged, and scenic regions of Vietnam on two wheels. Starting and ending in Hanoi, the route takes you deep into the mountains, across spectacular high passes, through peaceful valleys, and into remote villages where traditional ways of life are still very much alive.

Northwest Vietnam was once considered one of the most isolated and difficult-to-reach regions of the country. It is particularly well known for the historic Dien Bien Phu campaign and the dramatic mountain terrain surrounding it. Today, the region is increasingly popular with adventurous travelers, especially motorcyclists looking for spectacular scenery, challenging roads, and a more authentic experience away from Vietnam’s busiest tourist destinations.

More roads are being built every year, but many remote areas are still best explored by motorbike. During this 9-day adventure, we ride along the historic Highway 6 before turning onto smaller mountain roads and winding back roads. Expect high mountain passes, rugged tracks, limestone landscapes, terraced rice fields, forested valleys, and colorful ethnic minority villages along the way.

The route includes Mai Chau, Moc Chau, Son La, Tuan Giao, Muong Lay, Sapa, Bac Ha, Luc Yen, and Vu Linh. Each destination offers something different, from the traditional Thai stilt houses of Mai Chau to the spectacular mountain scenery around Sapa and the remote villages of Luc Yen and Vu Linh.

Accommodation is a combination of traditional homestays and comfortable hotels. Homestays in Mai Chau, Sapa, Bac Ha, Luc Yen, and Vu Linh give you the opportunity to meet local families, enjoy home-cooked food, and experience everyday life in the mountains. Hotels provide a comfortable place to rest after the longer riding days.

DETAILED ITINERARY

Day 1: Hanoi – Mai Chau. (~200 km, ~6h)

Today marks the beginning of our Northwest Vietnam in 9 Days motorcycle adventure. Before leaving Hanoi, we have a short briefing covering riding rules, road safety, and the day’s route, followed by a final check of the bikes and equipment.

We leave Hanoi and gradually escape the busy Red River Delta, where traditional farming, paddy fields, and small villages dominate the landscape. As we head west, the scenery changes dramatically. Limestone monoliths rise from the countryside as we enter the foothills inhabited by the Muong people.

The road then climbs toward the main mountain range before crossing a beautiful forested pass. From the top, we descend into the peaceful and hidden Mai Chau Valley, surrounded by green mountains, rice fields, and traditional villages.

Tonight, we stay with local White Thai friends in a traditional stilt house in Pom Coong Village. After the first day’s ride, this is a wonderful opportunity to experience local hospitality, enjoy authentic Vietnamese food, and relax in the peaceful mountain environment.

Day 2: Mai Chau – Son La. (~200 km, ~8h)

After breakfast, we leave the Mai Chau Valley and continue deeper into Northwest Vietnam. The road climbs gradually into a forested mountain region populated by H’mong communities, before descending toward the cooler highlands around Moc Chau.

We ride through a mountainous tea-growing region and then follow a long valley surrounded by extensive rice fields and traditional Black Thai villages. The quieter roads and changing landscapes make this a rewarding day in the saddle, with plenty of opportunities to stop for photographs and meet local people along the way.

Eventually, we reach Son La, an important mountain town and a convenient overnight stop. There is time to explore the local market and experience the atmosphere of this remote northern city.

Day 3: Son La – Muong Lay. (~200 km, ~8h)

Today is one of the most spectacular riding days of the entire Northwest Vietnam in 9 Days. The route takes us through a series of mountain passes, with approximately 15 passes along this section. The constant elevation changes create an incredible variety of landscapes.

The road winds through remote mountain country, passing traditional villages, forests, valleys, and dramatic ridgelines. Some sections may still be affected by road construction, so expect a mixture of smooth asphalt, rough surfaces, dust, and occasional muddy sections, depending on the weather.

This is probably one of the most scenic journeys of the trip, and the long riding day is well rewarded by the spectacular mountain views.

We eventually arrive in Muong Lay, a remote town surrounded by mountains and the Da River. The area’s changing geography and historical relocation have resulted in some confusing place names on older maps, making this an especially interesting region to explore by motorcycle.

Day 4: Muong Lay – Lai Chau. (~150 km, ~7h)

Today is one of the most remote and challenging riding days of Northwest Vietnam in 9 Days. We leave Muong Lay and follow a Black River tributary upstream, entering a wild forest region where traffic is light, and the roads become considerably more rugged.

The route follows a bumpy dirt road through isolated mountain communities, with opportunities to meet Tay, Thai, H’mong, and Dao people living far from the main tourist routes. As we climb higher, the landscape becomes increasingly dramatic, with thick forests, steep mountains, and remote valleys.

Eventually, we cross a mountain pass and enter the Tam Duong plain, surrounded by spectacular limestone karst formations. The jagged peaks rising from the landscape create an almost otherworldly setting and make this section particularly rewarding for adventurous riders.

Whenever conditions allow, we leave the main road to visit small villages and experience a side of Northwest Vietnam that few visitors see. This is a day for riders who enjoy remote tracks, natural scenery, and authentic encounters with mountain communities.

Day 5: Lai Chau – Sapa. (~100 km, ~5h)

We begin the morning with a visit to Tam Duong Market, where people from surrounding mountain villages come to trade, socialize, and buy everyday necessities. Depending on the market day, you may see colorful Black H’mong and Dao communities dressed in their traditional clothing.

Around 10 am, we leave Tam Duong and take the winding mountain road toward Sapa. Although the distance is relatively short, the road can be bumpy and slow, so we take our time and enjoy the scenery rather than rushing.

The route becomes increasingly spectacular as we approach the Hoang Lien mountain range, with forests, valleys, rugged peaks, and scattered mountain villages surrounding us. There are very few places to stop for food along this remote section, so we recommend having a good breakfast before departure.

After reaching Sapa, we can relax and enjoy the town’s cooler mountain climate and spectacular surroundings.

Day 6: Sapa – Trekking.

After several demanding days on the motorcycle, today is a chance to leave the bikes behind and explore the Sapa mountains on foot.

Although Sapa and Bac Ha have become increasingly popular with tourists, we can avoid the busiest areas by riding down to Ta Van or Ban Ho, where the landscape is quieter, and traditional villages are still surrounded by spectacular rice terraces and mountains.

From there, we begin a trek through the countryside, passing villages and rice fields while learning more about the traditional way of life of the Giay and other local ethnic communities. We can pass through Lao Chai Village and stop for lunch in Lao Chai, Ta Van, or another suitable local spot along the route.

The trekking route can be adjusted according to the group’s pace and interests. Along the way, local children may happily walk with you for part of the journey, making the experience even more memorable.

After the trek, we spend the night with a Giay family in a traditional stilt house, enjoying a home-cooked dinner and experiencing genuine local hospitality in the Sapa countryside.

Day 7: Sapa – Bac Ha. (~100 km, ~3 h)

After breakfast, we leave Sapa and begin a beautiful descent toward Lao Cai, a border city overlooking the Red River valley and close to the China border. The first section is around 34 km on a winding mountain road, offering excellent views as we gradually leave the high mountains behind.

From Lao Cai, we turn toward Bac Ha, riding another 70 km through spectacular mountain scenery. The road climbs and winds through valleys, forests, rice fields, and traditional villages before reaching Bac Ha.

After checking in at Dang Khoa Hotel, we have lunch and take some time to relax. In the afternoon, we head out on foot for a trek to Lung Phinh Village, exploring the surrounding countryside and getting a closer look at local village life.

Bac Ha is well known for its colorful ethnic communities and lively weekend markets, making it an excellent place to experience a different side of Northwest Vietnam.

Day 8: Bac Ha – Luc Yen – Vu Linh. (~180 km, ~6 h)

Today we leave Bac Ha and ride toward Luc Yen on an easy, mostly sealed road. As we descend from the highlands, the scenery gradually changes from rugged mountain terrain to greener valleys and agricultural countryside.

From Luc Yen, we leave the main road and follow a quieter secondary road along Thac Ba Lake. This is a particularly enjoyable section for motorcyclists, with winding roads, forested hills, water views, and small villages along the way.

We ride through areas traditionally inhabited by Dao and Tay communities before eventually reaching Vu Linh, a peaceful Dao village on the shores of Thac Ba Lake.

After six hours on the road, we arrive at our friends’ home and receive the famously warm Vu Linh welcome. Tonight is another opportunity to enjoy local food, conversation, and the relaxed atmosphere of a traditional mountain homestay.

Day 9: Vu Linh – Hanoi. (~200 km, ~6h) End of Northwest Vietnam In 9 Days.

After breakfast, we leave Vu Linh and begin the final leg of our Northwest Vietnam in 9 Days motorcycle adventure. We take a scenic mountain road toward Son Duong, riding along the foothills of the Tam Dao mountain range.

The route gradually descends from the mountains toward the Red River Delta. We continue through Son Tay before joining the roads leading back into Hanoi. The scenery becomes flatter and more agricultural as we leave the remote mountain country behind.

The final section can be busy as we approach the capital, so we aim to arrive in Hanoi before 4 pm, avoiding the worst of the evening rush hour.

After nine days of mountain passes, winding back roads, dirt tracks, ethnic minority villages, traditional homestays, rice terraces, and spectacular landscapes, we complete this unforgettable Northwest Vietnam motorbike tour back in Hanoi.
