3 Days Mai Chau Introduction

This 3-day Mai Chau motorbike tour takes you deep into the beautiful mountains of northern Vietnam, where you will stay with a friendly Thai host family in a traditional stilt house. The Thai people are known for being warm, welcoming, and easy-going, making a homestay one of the highlights of this Vietnam motorcycle adventure.

Based on our standard 2-day Mai Chau Motorbike Tour, adding one extra day allows us to explore much more of the spectacular countryside around Mai Chau. If you enjoy challenging riding, Pu Luong is one of the best destinations near Hanoi for off-road motorcycling, with rugged trails, mountain scenery, and remote villages. On the other hand, if you prefer a more relaxing experience, we can take a boat across the Black River reservoir north of Mai Chau and enjoy the peaceful mountain landscape.

For another combination of boating and adventure, we can head south toward the Ma River, where a boat trip can be combined with a short trek through the surrounding countryside. With mountain roads, ethnic minority villages, off-road trails, rivers, forests, boating, and local homestays, this 3-day journey offers an excellent introduction to northern Vietnam by motorbike. Mai Chau, Pu Luong motorbike tours in 3 Days Mai Chau

Trip Itinerary

Day 1: Hanoi – Mai Chau. (~170 km, ~6 h)

Once we leave the Red River Delta, the scenery quickly changes from busy villages and traditional farmland to limestone mountains and peaceful rural countryside. We ride west through Muong-inhabited areas, passing impressive limestone formations and gradually entering the foothills of northern Vietnam.

We then head toward the main mountain range before climbing a high, beautifully forested pass. The winding road takes us over the mountains before descending into the spectacular and relatively hidden Mai Chau Valley. Here, surrounded by green rice fields and mountains, we spend the night with local friends in a traditional Thai ethnic stilt house.

The Mai Chau Valley lies between the Da River and Ma River, creating a fertile region with a diverse landscape of rice paddies, forests, rivers, lakes, and medium-sized mountains. Numerous small paths and rural trails provide excellent opportunities for motorcycling, hiking, and exploring local villages.

The surrounding area is home to several ethnic communities, including the Muong, White Thai, H’Mong, and Dao. During our ride, we may meet local people at traditional markets or visit their villages, offering a genuine glimpse into the diverse cultures and everyday life of northern Vietnam.

Day 2: Mai Chau. Options.

Option 1 – Riding & trekking of 3 Days Mai Chau

Today combines motorcycle riding, boating, trekking, and local culture. We take a boat across the Black River Reservoir, a peaceful and relatively wild area surrounded by mountains and forests. We then continue toward a remote local village before leaving the bikes behind for a short trek to a beautiful waterfall.

The peaceful surroundings make this an excellent opportunity to experience the quieter side of Mai Chau and northern Vietnam. We enjoy a picnic lunch along the way before returning to Mai Chau by motorbike in the afternoon. In the evening, we have dinner and spend another night in a traditional Thai ethnic stilt house, enjoying the hospitality of our local host family.

Option 2 – Boat cruise of 3 Days Mai Chau

If you prefer a more relaxed day, this option focuses on scenic boating and countryside exploration. We ride for approximately 45 minutes from Mai Chau to the departure point on the Ma River, where we board a boat for a full-day cruise.

The river journey takes us through peaceful rural landscapes, with mountains, forests, villages, and traditional countryside along the way. We stop for a picnic lunch and have plenty of time to enjoy the tranquil surroundings before returning by boat.

In the afternoon, we ride back to Mai Chau and finish the day with a traditional dinner. We spend the night again in a Thai stilt house, making this a relaxing and culturally rich experience in the heart of northern Vietnam.

Option 3 – Off road of 3 Days Mai Chau

For experienced riders looking for something more challenging, we recommend the off-road option to Pu Luong Nature Reserve. Located not far from Mai Chau, Pu Luong is one of the best areas near Hanoi for adventurous motorcycle riding, with rough tracks, steep sections, mountain trails, and spectacular scenery.

This is a challenging off-road ride and requires good motorcycle control and confidence on rough terrain. The route takes longer than the other options because of the difficult roads. Still, the reward is an opportunity to explore remote parts of the Pu Luong mountains that are rarely visited by conventional tourists.

Day 3: Mai Chau – Hanoi. (~220 km, ~7 h) End of 3 days in Mai Chau.

We leave Mai Chau in the morning and begin our journey back to Hanoi. If the trip falls on a Sunday, we can make a detour of approximately 35 km to visit a local H’Mong market, where people from surrounding mountain communities gather to trade goods, meet friends, and socialize. It is a great opportunity to experience authentic ethnic minority culture in northern Vietnam.

After visiting the market, we ride back toward Hanoi along scenic limestone mountain roads, passing through rural villages, farmland, and dramatic karst landscapes. We stop for lunch somewhere along the route before continuing toward the capital.

We expect to arrive in Hanoi at around 5 pm, marking the end of our 3-day Mai Chau motorbike tour from Hanoi.
